Tour info

Floriade is Australia’s biggest celebration of spring.

This iconic Canberra event, which is now in its 27th year, runs for 30 days over the months of September and October. It showcases one million flowers in bloom throughout Canberra’s Commonwealth Park and entry is free. The event welcomes more than 400,000 local, interstate and international visitors each year.

Floriade is the perfect place to experience the beauty of spring over four distinctive weeks. Week one of Floriade will focus on Smart Living, with opportunities to learn from leaders in sustainable living and bio-organic gardening. Grab gardening tips from some of the country’s greenest thumbs or learn how to set up your own veggie garden.

Inventive designs, new age trends and cutting-edge fashions will be on display when week two explores the theme of Future Style. Be inspired by trendsetters and get ideas from experts in the field. Check out the latest gadgets during week three as Floriade investigates the theme of Invention.

Some of Australia’s prolific inventors and scientists will allow us to pick their brains as Tubby The Robot entertains the youngsters. Be inspired by some of Australia’s most innovative ideas, with entries for the Aspiring Inventors Competition on display.

Our country’s multicultural heritage will be on display during week four as Floriade focuses on the topic of Contemporary Cultures. Be entertained by traditional dances and watch as experienced chefs whip up a range of delicious cultural dishes.

Welcome to our 4 day Floriade Festival Tour of our nation’s capital - Canberra.  Today we travel through Goulburn, where we stop to stretch our legs before arriving in Canberra at lunch time.  We spend some time strolling through the city centre, which is also a chance to purchase lunch and then check into our accommodation for the next 3 nights. (Lunch own expense, dinner in the hotel) Quality Hotel Dickson, Canberra.

After a hearty breakfast our first visit of the day is Cockington Green.  This award winning attraction takes its name from the township of Cockington in Devon, an historic English Village, and is a one 12th scale reproduction of buildings and gardens in this English village - thatched cottages, a tiny church, the village green, an oats house in Kent, a riverside inn, castles and even Stonehenge.  We head back into Civic for some free time to purchase lunch or perhaps get our retail fix. The remainder of our afternoon will be at the Australian War Memorial.  The Australian War Memorial commemorates the sacrifice of the Australian men and women, who have served in war, through its ceremonial areas, extensive exhibitions and research facilities.  The focus of the commemoration is the Hall of Memory together with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Pool of Reflection and the Roll of Honour that lists the names of over 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have died in war.  Over the past few years the Memorial has undergone extensive redevelopment resulting in new galleries and displays.  The largest of these is the very impressive Anzac Hall.  It was in May 1942 when 4 Japanese Midget Submarines attacked Sydney Harbour that the reality of war was brought home to most Australians. The Sydney Under Attack multimedia presentation uses light, sound, photos and film to recreate that famous event in graphic detail.  Also on display in Anzac Hall is a vast collection of historic military technology including Australia’s oldest military aircraft – the Deperdussin, a First World War Mark IV Tank and a virtual re-enactment of Australia’s first naval victory in 1914.  We stay to hear the last post and closing ceremony. Returning to our accommodation we have time to relax before dinner.  (Breakfast and dinner in the Motel, lunch own expense)

This morning we will make our way up to the look-out at Mt Ainslie.  The views across Lake Burley Griffin are breathtaking.  Canberra is a truly unique city and one of only a few planned cities in the world. We then drive to Commonwealth Park, the centre of the Floriade Festival.  The centre piece is Nerang Pool which will be surrounded by a number of discrete themes.  The flower display is the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.  We have the rest of the day here amongst the abundance of bloom and beauty and there are many refreshment outlets where we can purchase our morning tea and lunch. We head back to our motel to freshen up before we are transferred to our dinner cruise on Lake Burley Griffin to view Canberra from a totally different perspective. What a wonderful way to share our final night in Canberra.  (Breakfast in the motel/ lunch own expense/ dinner cruise)

DAY 4 (B) HOME – Friday
Unfortunately our holiday must come to an end, so after a drive through Embassy Row and past The Lodge we head for home.  We will stop for lunch along the way and arrive home early afternoon having experienced a wonderful holiday in Canberra.  Until we meet again, farewell!  (Breakfast in the Hotel/ lunch own expense)
